It’s official now! We are entering a new Age. Along with electricity-powered cars, slowly but surely making their ways to our lives, we are now witnessing the beginning of electric bikes development. Yes-yes, I know this is not the first fully functioning bike without that lovely and so familiar aluminium motor under a tank (big companies have been playing with the idea for decades ), but this one is a rare, decent looking electric type with quite acceptable specs. What’s even more exciting is that this Street Tracker is custom built.
Think about this: you take nothing, then you imagine how that nothing transforms into a modified Yamaha SR400 and you build the thing. That must have been fun but along with joy accompanying such adventure comes its complexity.
For Shanghai Customs the goal was to challenge contemporary electric bikes market with a fresh concept of a custom electric motorcycle. Those bikes available out there were all too familiar sportbikes and classic bicycles type, they believed. It wasn’t enough for creative mind. Therefore Shanghai Customs came up with a brilliant thought of mixing pleasant and well known Yamaha SR400 silhouette with the electric technology.
That’s where it all started. A newly designed frame was made by the professionals at Chongqing’s factory. The workshop also got help modifying a swingarm for a hub-based electric motor. After that, the swingarm with the rear wheel was sent to the motors factory for final modifications and adaptation of the 5000 W battery-powered electric motor.
Electric Street Tracker is for sure much less loud than the bikes we’re used to. It can also travel 250km. and speeds up to 140km/h. The whole thing depends on a 55kg 72 V 80 amp lithium-ion battery – just like those used in the hybrid-electric cars.
Besides that, SR400-lke Tracker has its own Android App controller with an option to monitor performance information, which is clearly a big advantage. And while many of us aren’t still ready to give up the type of bikes we fell in love with a long time ago, this electric alternative should be certainly given consideration, if not as “the only one”, then at least as “one of…”.
